US immigration promises 14-day artist Visa processing

League of American Orchestras Newsletter:

USCIS Promises Major Improvements to the Visa Process
Washington, D.C. – Senior officials at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) yesterday promised public stakeholders that processing times for regularly-filed artist visa petitions will not exceed 14 days. The agency also promised that significant improvements to the quality of artist visa processing will soon be underway as the agency undergoes a major effort to revise its policy and training programs for the two service centers that process the O and P visas used by artists traveling to the United States for performances.

These commitments come in response to requests from the nonprofit performing arts community and following significant intervention by leaders in the House, Senate, and the White House Domestic Policy Council. The League has been advocating for improvements in partnership with national colleagues in the Performing Arts Visa Working Group: American Federation of Musicians, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Dance/USA, North American Performing Arts Managers and Agents,OPERA America, Performing Arts Alliance, and Theatre Communications Group, and the full range of national arts organizations co-sponsoring annual Arts Advocacy Day policy requests.

14-Day Regular Processing Promised
According to the USCIS, both the California and Vermont visa processing centers are currently processing regularly filed O and P visa petitions (without the $1,000 Premium Processing fee) within an average of 14 days. Since 2001, regular processing times have varied wildly – ranging up to 120 days for some petitions, despite a requirement in law to process O and P petitions within 14 days. USCIS now says they will strive to honor that 14-day requirement.

While this is a highly encouraging development, petitioners should continue to file visa petitions as early as possible and carefully track the processing times for their petitions. If processing times exceed 14 days, petitioners are advised to contact the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1–800-375–5283. Given the inconsistent record of processing times, and the frequently ineffective response from the Customer Service Center, please track your visa’s processing time and report the results to the League in our new online data collector. The League and our fellow national performing arts service organizations will be closely monitoring trends in processing times and the information you provide will help us ensure that USCISfulfills its promise.

Warning: Some of These Stats Are Really, Really Scary…

As the music industry stumbles into a totally new place, the number of artists actually selling serious quantities in the USA is astonishingly low.  At New Music Seminar in New York this week, Tommy Silverman and Eric Garland (BigChampagne) rolled through a tirade of  stats showing the extreme challenges that marketers and artists face.  Sure, the album itself is waning, but these stats are still worth examining (Nielsen Soundscan is the data source).

*Albums that sold at least one copy in 2009: 98,000

*Albums selling more than 10,000 units in 2009: 1,319

*Albums selling more than 10,000 units in 2008: 1,515

*Albums selling more than 250,000 units in 2009: 85

*Albums selling more than 250,000 units in 2001: 214

*Albums selling more than 5,000 units in 2009: 2,058

*Albums selling under than 1,000 units in their first year of release: 92,601

*Number of albums selling less than 100 copies in 2009: 81,000

PopKomm newsletter july 16

Dear Pop(komm)friends,

nothing is sweeter than the taste of success, so please enjoy dipping into our summer selection box!

Popkomm: Hardly any room left at the inn

With just two months to go until Popkomm, Germany’s international music trade fair is already as good as booked out. Dr. Ralf Kleinhenz, General Manager Popkomm GmbH: „Gate A2, where the music export offices have their lounges, is completely booked out. Gate A1, where, amongst others, the DMV (German Music Publishers Association), various one-person companies and German royalty collection society GEMA have their stands, has very little space left. Due to the considerable demand we are trying to find additional space.” Daniel Barkowski, Director of Popkomm, adds: “There is an enormous amount of interest in Popkomm! We are experiencing a lot of attention from companies that are looking to establish international networks and business contacts.”

This is what are partners are saying:

Stefan Michalk, MD of the Federal Association for the Music Industry (Bundesverband Musikindustrie e.V.): „Even under the umbrella of the Berlin Music Week, Popkomm is still the most international of all the industry gatherings. The new concept is attractive for exhibitors, trade visitors and the general public alike. We wish Popkomm all the best for the restart.”

Helen Smith, Executive Chair of IMPALA (Independent Music Companies Association): “We’re delighted to be going back to Popkomm and are pleased to see them supporting the independent sector again. I hope this year’s event will be a great success.”

Jake Beaumont Nesbit, Executive Director IMMF (International Music Managers’ Forum): “The IMMF is anticipating its partnership with Popkomm 2010 where artists and those who want to work with them will discover an unprecedented range of insights and developments.“

Dr. Heinz Stroh, MD DMV (German Music Publishers Association): „As at previous events, the German Music Publishers Association will provide an opportunity for its members to be part of their communal stand at Popkomm 2010. Following last years’ cancellation, the expectation for the new collective concept is high. In 2010 the music publishers will again definitely be grabbing the opportunity not just to discuss sector related issues with their partners and colleagues but also possible approaches.”

Julian Wall, Director International Events & Independent Member Services BPI (British Recorded Music Industry): “Popkomm was always a very important part of the international trade event calendar and it was much missed in 2009. I’m looking forward to attending a revamped and re-energised Popkomm in September 2010.”

Will Lines, Pressesprecher MPA (Music Publishers Association): “Popkomm is an important fixture on the Eu! ropean music industry calendar, and provides a great opportunity for UK music publishers to make new business partners, to meet up with existing partners, and to hear some great music too.”

Reeperbahn Campus @ c/o pop

The Reeperbahn Festival has been a close friend and partner of c/o pop for some time now. At the showcase festival Eurosonic earlier this year the Reeperbahn Festival and c/o pop jointly organised an industry breakfast.

Reeperbahn Festival’s involvement in c/o pop will again be of culinary nature as it presents, jointly with c/o pop, the Europareise barbecue at Stadtgarten, 6 p.m. on friday, June 24th. As part of the c/o pop festival programme Reeperbahn Festival has put together two concerts taking place on thursday and friday in Bogen 2, featuring acts including Ja, Panik, 1000 Robota, Post War Years and Crystal Fighters.More

Joint activities between the C’n'B - Creative Business Convention and the Reeperbahn Campus are also in the pipeline on the conference front. So Reeperbahn Campus and C’n'B are presenting together with You Are in Control (Reykjavik) the “Transpanel” - an ongoing panel starting on thursday, 2 p.m., June 23rd, at C’n'B, going on at Reeperbahn Campus in September and ending in October in Reykjavik at the You Are in Control conference.

Ray Cokes returns to Reeperbahn

These shows just took the cake! Music fans and professionals were enthusiastic about the shows with the british entertainer Ray Cokes that sold out Schmidt Theater three times in 2009. In September the legendary MTV host will return to Reeperbahn. In three shows named “Ray’s Reeperbahn Revue” Cokes will again present artists of the Reeperbahn Festival who will have to face funky questions and will perform unplugged live-gigs.

Ray’s Reeperbahn Revue takes place on all three days of the Reeperbahn Campus from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Schmidt Theater.

You Are In Control - Iceland seminar coming up

CREATIVES IN THE DIGITAL WORLD: CAPITALIZING ON COOPERATION
Creative Industries Conference Focusing on Digital Business to Take Place in Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland (June 11, 2010) – You are in Control, an international conference exploring digital business developments in the music, media, arts and gaming industries, will take place for the fourth consecutive year in Reykjavik, Iceland on October 1st and 2nd, 2010. The conference is hosted by Iceland’s creative industries and aims to empower attendees with knowledge on how to maneuver in the fast changing digital distribution world.

You Are In Control brings together prominent players from all the creative industries in a cooperative fashion to answer some of digital debate’s most burning questions: How to expand the pie so everyone receives their fair share? What unites design, music, films, visual arts and gaming? How do business models already overlap and what does the future hold?

Iceland, despite its small population size of 300,000, has produced some big creative names, such as Bjork, Sigurros, and CCP – a leading global multiplayer game company. The location backdrop, which has recently received global attention for volcanic activity, serves as a reminder that small origins can generate powerful and far-reaching effects.

Gerfried Stocker, CEO of Ars Electronica Center, says of the location, “There is a lot of buzz about Iceland being a cradle for creativity,” and Nicola Slade, editor of Record of the Day continues, “I am interested in how you have managed to pull together people from all strands of the ‘arts’ and not just music. I think we all have a lot to learn from one another.”

Last year’s keynote speaker, IDEO‘s managing partner and co-chief Paul Bennett says, “It’s impossible not to be discovered. Everyone has the ability to broadcast in a way like never before. Now you can push your ideas out to the world from multiple channels. But its about one word: collaboration.”

Speakers confirmed for 2010 include Yancey Strickler, cofounder of Kickstarter, Benji Rogers, creator of PledgeMusic.com and Christopher Peterka, founder of the consultancy firm Gannaca.

To register or receive more information about speakers and the program itinerary, visit www.youareincontrol.is. Don’t miss the “early bird” offer of € 125 until July 31st.

You are in Control is an annual conference hosted by Iceland Music Export in partnership with the Center For Icelandic Art, Iceland Design Center, Icelandic Film Center, Icelandic Gaming Industry and the Icelandic Literature Fund. Press materials, logos and high-resolution photographs are available for download on www.youareincontrol.is.
